ES40 boots Linux with some effort using SRM up to where the disk drivers are initialized, and in some random cases I even got to the console, but it is excruciatingly slow and has no SMP support. While commercial/freeware (Non-ES40) solutions work with Tru64 and OpenVMS which rely on the SRM firmware, as a comparison I have never been able to get Linux booting through an emulator, only natively on my AlphaStation XP1000, which is too new for NT. I never had success with Alpha due to the firmware implementation on Qemu.
